Gift Idea: Award Winning: The Pied Piper of South Shore, Toys and Tragedy in Chcago, Caryn Amster

I wrote in an earlier post about Caryn Lazar Amster’s amazing true crime book The Pied Piper of South Shore: Toys and Tragedy in Chicago.

I could go on and on how wonderful this important and nail-biting book is, winner of a true crime award. I could tell you how important a historical work it is documenting Ms. Lazar’s personal tragedy, and the tragedy of the impact of the crime on the surrounding business community where my Grandfather owned a Real Estate Office At the time of the murder.

I could tell you about what happened after I wrote the Original Post, meeting her with my father and brother, talking to her about shopping at their store and their customer Mandy Patinkin who I had always thought was familiar since being a fan of Sunday in The Park With George.

I could tell you about the book’s incredible value as a primary source for those studying merchandising, the history of the City of Chicago, the history of Chicago’s neighborhoods, or anything to do with the movement of people and race in the 1930′s through the 1960′s.

But instead I’ll just be brief and tell young buy one of the most surprising true dramatic stories by an Author you never heard of you are likely to find. A tale told in a clear, taut well researched way without hyperbole or hysterics.

Amster manages to tell the story of this tragedy without making it into something it
was not, while seeing the damage caused by a cascading series of circumstances for what it was. A tragedy in an era of tragedies that helped shaped the hard times that followed.

I will also say that what I told her the day we met. We moved to a new neighborhood the previous August. Had we not, because of the proximity of the date of the murder with the birthday of one of the kids in my family, we all could have been in the store when that gunman walked in. I know what my brother 9 and I 10 would have done. We’d been playing Batman and Robin for years. We would have rushed him without thinking twice just like we rushed the bad guy cowboys every summer at the amusement park in Eagle River getting us and who knows who else killed in the process.

But we moved and so didn’t get the birthday card for a free toy at Wee Toys for that birthday. So, I guess I do find this story pretty personally interesting. Nut you won’t need
that to enjoy this book. Besides, I can’t help thinking it’s natural forth big screen.

Oh, Amazon.com carries it. You can click the link in the book title above or enter the title in the Amazon search box on your right.

We are now at the next-to-last episode of the rookie Fox sitcom Brothers, which happens to be “Girls Girls Girls,” the first of two new episodes airing on December 27.

Carl Weathers, CCH Pounder/Brothers 1.12

Romance is in the air at the Trainor home, and the Trainor brothers try to hook up with attractive women during the occasion.

But while their mother Adele is pleased to set Chill up on a blind date with social worker Jenny (Rosi Reed, My Wife and Kids), she’s not happy when Mike makes a move on her friend Gloria (Leila Arcieri, Son of the Beach).

Also, Coach decides he’s ready to hook up, too, so he tries to behave more romantically for his wife.

The holiday-themed episode features returning guest stars Tichina Arnold (Everybody Hates Chris) as Adele’s sister Cynthia, Lenny Clarke (Rescue Me) as Cynthia’s husband Lenny, and Steve Schirripa (The Sopranos) as Mike’s agent Louie. Woot!

Adele and Coach play relationship therapists when Lenny arrives out of the blue after Cynthia takes a solo trip to Mexico. Hip-hop recording artist Snoop Dogg returns to reprise his role as shady Cousin Kenny on “Snoop Returns,” the first of two new back-to-back December 13 episodes of the Fox sitcom Brothers.

Michael Strahan, Snoop Dogg, Carl Weathers/Brothers 1.10

Also making a cameo appearance as himself is football commentator and two-time Super Bowl winner Jimmy Johnson, former head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

Cousin Kenny helps Coach’s brother Maurice (Fox claims the actor is former star football player Fred Williamson, but preview photos show Antonio Fargas of Everybody Hates Chris and Starsky and Hutch) get released from jail, which prompts concern from Adele when the ex-convict arrives to stay with them. To her surprise, however, Maurice turns out to be a changed person.

Elsewhere, Johnson stops by the Trainor’s restaurant to discuss football, and Mike tries to hook up with a new waitress (Trauma’s Ryan Michelle Bathe) at the establishment.

Preview “Snoop Returns” in the photos below. Looks like series regular Daryl “Chill” Mitchell took a break from the camera since he’s only in the last pic.

Brothers: ‘Week in the Chair’ Photos

Fox’s rookie sitcom Brothers presents the fresh episode “Week in the Chair” on Sunday, November 22.

Daryl ''Chill'' Mitchell, Michael Strahan/Brothers 1.09

After Mike offers his observation that confinement to a wheelchair isn’t all that bad, Chill bets his brother he couldn’t survive using a wheelchair for a week, hence the episode’s title.

Of course, Mike accepts the challenge to show he’s perfectly capable of doing what Chill is forced to, but his perception changes once he begins to actually experience what using a wheelchair is like. So, will he or won’t he lose the Super Bowl ring he puts on the line for the bet?

When Mike gets a chance to play again in the NFL, he assumes his financial problems may also end soon. Yeah, right!

Unfortunately for him, the only we he can return to active duty is if he passes a physical scheduled in just two weeks. So, with not much time to prepare, he relies on his dad Coach and brother Chill to help him get back in shape.

Elsewhere, Adele butts her nose where it doesn’t belong, namely in the business of a student who decides to pursue a career as a professional baseball player.

Brothers: ‘Meet Mike Trainor/Assistant Coach’ Photos

Fox’s Brothers has a biggie coming up. The new October 23 episode “Meet Mike Trainor/Assistant Coach” features no less than three guest stars: Kim Kardashian (pictured below), Access Hollywood’s Nancy O’Dell, and Bruce Springsteen E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons, all playing themselves.

During the episode, Coach fires his son Chill as assistant coach after their high school football team loses a game in a most embarrassing manner. However, worst of all for Chill, Coach then asks Mike for help coming up with some new, improved plays.

Elsewhere, the latest hostess at Trainor’s restaurant attracts the attention of O’Dell and Kardashian after she spreads gossip to promote the restaurant and bring in new customers. Both women show up, and Kardashian is determined to set the record straight about the rumors.

Another New Sunday ‘Brothers’: Commercial/Coach DMV

Fox is doing it again. Although a Major League Baseball game preempted the regularly scheduled Friday Brothers on October 16, the network is making up for it with a fresh episode called “Commercial/Coach DMV” on Sunday, October 18, at 7pm ET.

Will Sasso, Michael Strahan/Brothers 1.06

The episode features guest star Will Sasso (MADtv, pictured above and below at left), who plays Anthony “Avalanche” Carter, a former NFL rival of lead character Mike.

Poor Mike has a hard time of it after his agent lands him two on-camera opportunities for extra money, one involving post-game commentary with Avalanche and the other a commercial promo with Adele. However, the seemingly fortunate gigs don’t go as well as hoped when Mike realizes that both Avalanche and Adele are difficult people to work with on-screen.

Elsewhere, Coach encounters problems renewing his driver’s license, prompting shrewd Chill to bend over backwards to help him pass the test so he won’t end up chauffeuring his father everywhere.

Sneak a quick peek at the Sunday episode in the photos below. The second one includes Sopranos alum Steve Schirripa, who guest stars as Mike’s agent Louie.
